Our internship program supports the University's academic mission by providing students with opportunities to apply classroom knowledge to practical work experience. We offer a variety of internship opportunities each year that may be suitable for students across many academic disciplines.

Internship Positions

Under the supervision of the Alcohol, Nicotine, and Other Drug (ANOD) Educator / Counselor at Health & Wellness, ANOD Interns will assist with the development and implementation of alcohol, nicotine, and other drug prevention, education, and support initiatives.

The program's goal is to reduce risk for harms associated with student alcohol, nicotine, THC, and other drug use choices. 

To that end, students can expect to be involved in the following projects:

  • Facilitate outreach and create / deliver educational programming to residence halls and student clubs and organizations
  • Research trends related to college student substance use
  • Promote awareness of ANOD services offered through Health & Wellness including individual counseling, educational programming, website information, and resources for support.
  • Act as an ally with students experiencing bias and discrimination as a result of their identity, substance use choices, or recovery process.

This work requires a strong interest in the subject area and the ability to engage and grow student involvement in these efforts.  

Responsibilities

  • Become versed in Health & Wellness key messaging related to alcohol, nicotine and other drugs
  • Work individually or within a team to design and implement ANOD initiatives
  • Engage and collaborate with student leaders, student groups, teams, and organizations
  • Contribute to creating student focused ANOD educational messaging for social media, print materials, or web content
  • Enhance ANOD knowledge base relevant to work objectives by reviewing college student research-related to attitudes, choices and use of alcohol, nicotine or other drugs
  • Participate in mandatory Health & Wellness internship trainings
  • Familiarize and utilize data collected from Health & Wellness and the biennial National College Health Association (NCHA) survey to target education and messaging
  • Identify new and creative ways to deconstruct misperceptions about alcohol and other drug use in college
  • Complete projects in a complete and timely manner
  • Keep supervisor updated as to status of assigned work on a weekly basis
  • Attend and participate in weekly supervision and intern group meetings

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in college student attitudes and behaviors related to alcohol, nicotine, and other drug use and their well -being.
  • Ability to maintain caring professionalism and boundaries when talking with peers about substance use including choices to abstain from use.
  • Fields of academic study can include sustainability, public health, social work, psychology, sociology, or human behavior coursework
  • Creativity to develop projects independently
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, public speaking
  • Ability to synthesize research into concise and impactful messaging that connects with UNH students
  • Enjoyment in seeking out and interacting with UNH students, student leaders, or other UNH community members
  • Practiced in holding non-judgment and empathy for others
  • Ability to commit time to the internship and to be flexible with schedule as needed for programming requests that do not interfere with class attendance
  • The intern will work directly with the ANOD Educator / Counselor to develop and meet objectives agreed upon by both parties, based on both the interests of the intern and the needs of Health & Wellness. Appropriate training will be provided on ANOD prevention education and Health & Wellness key messages.

Minimum 4 hours weekly

Additional Information

Although this is an unpaid internship, it is a great opportunity for students who are interested in public health to gain professional work experience and enhance their knowledge in the area of substances and addiction. You will be provided with the training and resources needed to fulfill your internship goals, including formal and informal supervision with the Health & Wellness ANOD Educator / Counselor. 

If you are seeking academic credit, this must be arranged through your academic program. 

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION

 

Under the supervision of our Registered Dietitian, the Nutrition & Eating Concerns Intern will work to educate their peers on evidence-based nutrition information and to deconstruct misinformation about nutrition. This will be done through the implementation and evaluation of education and prevention initiatives for the 2025-2026 academic year.

This position is ideal for students who have a passion for nutrition and are interested in gaining knowledge in behavior change, nutrition, wellness, and eating concerns. An excitement for educating, public speaking, and nutrition is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a strong knowledge of nutrition trends, fad diets, and eating concerns through trainings and independent research.
  • Facilitate "What’s Cooking?" classes by educating their peers on how to make healthy, balanced meals and providing nutrition education on the meal being prepared (see full program description) to a variety of populations throughout campus.
  • Co-facilitate programs such as "Let’s Talk Diets" and “How to Help a Friend” (see full program descriptions) to a variety of populations throughout campus, along with any other requests for nutrition programming that are received.
  • Co-facilitate “Intuitive Eating Workshop” by educating peers on the 10 principles of intuitive eating through discussions and activities.
  • Co-create new programs and initiatives based on the needs of the UNH community.
  • Provide educational programs, tables, and passive education at campus-wide events, as well as Health & Wellness sponsored and requested programs.
  • Research emerging science and best practices in nutrition and eating concerns.
  • Complete intern training and attend additional professional development sessions as needed.

4-6 hours per week

Additional Information

This is an unpaid internship. You can receive academic credit with the approval of your academic department. This academic placement can be for one semester or for both fall and spring semester. You will be provided with the training and resources needed to fulfill your internship goals, including weekly supervision meetings with the registered dietitian. This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in health and are seeking to gain work experience in nutrition education and community outreach.  

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION

 

This is a great opportunity for students who are interested providing accurate, holistic, intersectional, and comprehensive sex-positive education to their peers at UNH.   

Under the supervision of the Sexual Health Educator, the sexual well-being interns will assist with the creation and implementation of sexual health programs for UNH students. Program goals include teaching students about safer sex practices to prevent unintended pregnancy and STIs/HIV, enhancement of sexual well-being, guiding students towards an integrative and well-being focused understanding of sex, and reproductive justice.  

Guided by their own passions and interests, interns will have various opportunities throughout the year to develop and facilitate programs, events, and campus activities related to sexual health and well-being. The ideal Sexual Well-Being intern will be comfortable holding multiple truths, have an interest in public health education, and approach sexuality from a biopsychosocial perspective.  

Responsibilities  

  • Complete training in STI/HIV and unintended pregnancy prevention best practices for college students using a sex positive and inclusive public health approach
  • Complete additional training in conjunction with other Health & Wellness interns during the fall 2026 semester
  • Co-create and implement health promotion campaigns from research, design, implementation and evaluation:
    • Sextober/Sexpo (October)
    • Pleasure Party (February)
    • Sexual Health Teach In (March)
    • Tabling and Outreach Across Campus (Year-Round)
  • Provide educational programs on sexual well-being and safer sex to peers (i.e., Residential Life, Fraternity and Sorority Life) and at campus-wide events
  • Collaborate with other intern teams to create cross-sectional events and programming
  • Spend roughly 4-6 hours per week working on materials/events in the Living Well Services
  • Attend weekly meetings with fellow interns

Additional Information

This is an unpaid internship. You can receive academic credit, with the approval of your academic department. Depending on course credit requirements, it necessitates roughly 4-6 hours per week.  This academic placement can be for a semester or for fall and spring semesters. You will be provided with training and resources needed to fulfill your internship goals, including weekly supervision meetings with the Sexual Health Educator.

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION

Under the supervision of the well-being educator/counselor, well-being interns assists with the design, implementation, and evaluation of well-being initiatives for UNH students. This internship provides opportunities for students to gain experience in public health, health promotion, and prevention. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Present organization’s signature programs on well-being, stress, and emotional social learning (SEL) in a variety of settings (i.e., academic classrooms, fraternity & sorority life, student organizations).
  • Utilize the UNH Well-Being Wheel to develop interventions that support students in gaining knowledge, self-awareness, and skills to actively care for themselves.
  • Assist in teaching our well-being course that is offered as part of the Recreation Management & Policy’s Lifetime Activity Program (LAP).
  • Provide individual sleep assessments and co-create action plans with students utilizing a wellness coaching framework.
  • Utilize UNH’s data from the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment to research best practices, write key messages, and design interventions.
  • Represent Health & Wellness at campus events.
  • Collaborate with campus departments and student organizations to strengthen well-being initiatives at UNH.

Additional Information 

This is an unpaid internship. Academic credit may be available with approval from your academic department. The time commitment is roughly 5 hours per week, possibly more depending on programming needs, and can be for one semester or for the fall and spring semesters. You will receive the training and resources needed to achieve your internship goals, including weekly supervision meetings with a well-being educator/counselor. 

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION

 

Placements 

  • Placements are made before the academic year ends, typically before the end of April.
  • If you are seeking academic credit, this must be arranged through your academic program.
  • Internships are available to UNH students who have appropriate experience, background, and interest.
  • We do not offer internship opportunities during the summer or semester breaks, though the mental health internship begins during the summer to prepare for an early semester event.
  • In most cases, we can work around your academic schedule.
  • We will provide you with an internship supervisor who will:
    • Provide appropriate training.
    • Meet with you weekly for supervision.
    • Work with you to develop a learning contract that outlines credit hours, responsibilities, and placement goals and objectives.
    • Provide ongoing feedback and provide evaluation at mid-placement and at the completion of your placement.
  • With your written consent, Community Standards will be contacted for information related to your disciplinary history prior to a final decision regarding involvement with Health & Wellness.  Any prior misconduct will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and does not automatically mean that you will be ineligible for a position.
